[color=var(--primary-text)][backcolor=var(--surface-background)][size=0.875]This is quite shocking and a complete tragedy. We have seen some previously terrible examples of habitat plant poaching but this is the worst yet. And it is all due to the demand from hobbyist growers in Asia and China specifically, where these plants recently arrived. The Chinese should be ashamed. It is no better than being a drug dealer or poaching Rhino for their horn and Pangolin for their scales and other things that Chinese people seem to need so very badly. Conophytum bachelorum is one of the rarest species restricted to few 100's of plants on a single hill in Namaqualand. That's all there is in the whole world. Or all there was. Hopefully someone in authority will visit the hill soon to assess the damage. The Chinese are somehow contacting and employing local South Africans to collect these plants and ship them to China. The locals are poor. They know it's wrong but they need the income. There may possibly be other South Africans in authority who are facilitating it.The Chinese are preying on them for their own profit. In one way I feel bad for publishing this. There are many good Chinese. As usual it's a few people tarnishing the reputation of the many. Someone must know who is involved and who is responsible and feel ashamed and guilty enough to name names. Please message me in complete confidence of anonymity if you can provide any useful information to stop this happening.
