AnAppeal to Conophytum lovers
byChris Rodgerson
rewritten by AndyYang

Chris RodgersonManyconophytum species are rare in cultivation and as cono lovers, growers andcollectors we want to own them and grow them. There is nothing wrong with that. But many of them are also rare in nature and that should be respected. I'm suremost people will not be aware that many conophytums exist in only a small areaof a few square metres on a single hill and have lived there in peace forperhaps thousands of years.

Somelike Conophytum burgeri and Conophytum regale are available to collectorsbecause they were discovered a long time ago and have been in cultivation formany years, so we can buy nursery grown plants and seeds. Others only recentlydiscovered like Conophytum youngii and Conophytum confusum have yet to becomecommon in cultivation. But eventually with the skill of growers they will beavailable to all. It will not take long, maybe few years but worth waiting forif it protects the plants in habitat.

Mostconophytum growers will know that many wild plants of Conophytum bachelorumrecently arrived in Asia. I would like all my fellow cono lovers to know thatdue to this there are none left at the only place they grew, so Conophytumbachelorum is now extinct in the wild. I really want the person or peopleresponsible for this theft to know and understand what a terrible thing theyhave done.

But itis not only Conophytum bachelorum arriving in Asia. Manythousands of cono pageae, cono concavum, cono globosum and others have alsobeen stolen to order and shipped.

I knowplants have previously gone to Europe and the UK where it is now illegal andmost growers understand the impact it has on nature. But now wild conos aremostly going to Asia and in far greater numbers than they ever did to othercountries. There is not an infinite supply, many more may soon be gone andextinct.

Is theextinction of more conophytum species really what you want? I don't think so. Mostare good and honest people. But the greed of a few to make large amounts ofmoney from these plants is causing great harm to the environment. We all haveto protect these plants for the planet and for future generations, yourchildren and grand children. It is your responsibility to try and put a stop tothe importation of habitat plants. Think about it. Don't buy them, buy seedraised plants from legitimate growers, please.

Andy YangFrommy personal knowledge, in the past few years, conos were shipped most to Chinaand South Korea. But this year the rapid growth of cono lovers from ThailandMalaysia Phillippines also catch my attention. Although I don’t grow many conosand seldom sell them, I’m pretty sure that after no longer than several years, the price will fall down. You all can buy at a very cheap price. So think foryour wallet, wait for some time.
